Microsoft revealed itself as a serious contender for the role of Big Brother, the omnipresent authoritarian leader from George Orwell’s dystopian novel, 1984.
One play for the title came early in the morning, in the government sphere, where Microsoft and the New York Police Department announced the jointly developed Domain Awareness System.

From CFR – To some, the NYPD’s new system–or at least its name–might seem reminiscent of the federal government’s aborted “Total Information Awareness” (TIA) program, a program the Defense Department launched soon after the 9/11 attacks.
